MEET OUR FACULTY

Sara Nelson MD, MHPE
Fellowship Director
Sara Nelson, MD, MHPE is an emergency physician and educator who loves blending clinical care with creative approaches to teaching. She’s an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) and an attending at Maine Medical Center. After graduating from Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School, she completed her emergency medicine residency at the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency (HAEMR) at Brigham and Women’s and Mass General, where she served as Chief Resident.

Since joining the Maine Med team in 2009, Sara has worn many hats—Clerkship Director, Assistant Residency Program Director, and faculty Coach for TUSM Maine Track students. She’s now the Director of the Medical Education Fellowship, as well as Director of Innovative Curriculum and Chair of the TUSM Curriculum Committee.

Sara helped found Global Emergency Care, an organization working to improve emergency medicine training in Uganda. She’s passionate about making medical education better (and more human), with research focusing on topics like burnout, empathy in healthcare, and training in resource-limited settings. She also holds a Master’s in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois Chicago.
When she’s not teaching or in the ED, you can often find Sara at her home on Littlejohn Island with her husband, two kids, and their very chill Maine coon cat, Cheez-it.

Fellowship Director
Carl Germann MD, MHPE

Carl Germann, MD, MHPE is Professor of Emergency Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) and medical educator at Maine Medical Center. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine. He completed his residency training at Maine Medical Center and returned to UIC to complete a Masters in Health Professions Education.

Carl is dedicated to enhancing medical education through humanism, mentorship, and collaboration. He strives to foster empathy and support in patient care and medical education, particularly when there are competing demands in a fast-paced and dynamic clinical environment.

He currently serves as the Director of Medical School Orientation, Portland Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC), and Clinical Electives and Fourth-Year Programs for the Tufts Maine Track Program. As Director of the Maine Track Capstone Course, he assists students through the transition from medical school to residency. He has contributed to various educational committees, including the Tufts Curriculum Committee. He has served as Assistant Program Director for our EM residency and continues to serve on the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and as Core Faculty. From a faculty development perspective, he has been involved in the Maine Institute of Teaching Excellence (MITE) since its inception and is an Academy Master Educator.
Carl also enjoys supporting local community initiatives. He has served on the Board of Partners for World Health and as the organizational physician for Rippleffect, which helps youth build confidence and interpersonal skills and foster an appreciation for the outdoors.
When he’s not at the hospital, he's often exploring the great outdoors of New England with his wife, three children, and their dog.
